How to Deal with Self-Doubt & Insecurity
Generally, confidence is considered a natural trait. But it is not an in-built quality. That is to say, confidence can be built purposefully. Therefore do not be anxious if self-doubt is an emotion you are struggling with. In other words, self-doubt causes distress and holds us back from achieving our goals. Consequently, it makes it harder for people to reach the level where they aim to be. Therefore, the question is how to overcome self-doubt so that you can move ahead in life successfully. In this article, we will explore a few ways that shall help us overcome self-doubt and make us more confident and self-assured.
Understand that Your feelings of Self-Doubt are common
Quite often, we get intimidated by the task ahead of us, because we feel we are not capable of doing it. That is to say, although we know that we are leading our self towards the right path and that this is exactly what we should be doing, yet we hesitate. As a result, it affects our mental and physical being. Further, it also lags us behind from others in several ways. However, we all go through this feeling of self-doubt, fear, and panic. As a result, it leads us to unhealthy circumstances. But the point is, do not be depressed by being aware that you get confused and remain in self-doubt because that is what we all go through in life. Therefore the first thing is to accept it as a natural emotion and do not be alarmed and nervous.
Remind yourself that Allah does not want to see you in Self-doubt
Allah has considered man as His most favorite creation. To clarify, the fact that we all belong to Allah and have been created by Him is enough proof that we are special and capable.
“And I have chosen you.” (20:13)
Therefore, whenever you are in a situation where self-doubt overpowers you, think of your Creator. If your creator is such a great and self-assured Being, then we must possess His characters and try to become Muslims of strong character and will power. Moreover, we must think that He is The One Who chose us. Therefore we do not need to falter in our ways and should not let self-doubt be a part of us. The solution to this self-doubt is to analyze the reason of our self-doubt. Further, we must also see if it is because we are not following Allah’s guided path. It happens at times that we are in a perplex state and self-doubt because we are drifting away from Allah. Therefore the key is to monitor yourself regularly and do not let self-doubt be a part of you because of your loss of interest in religion.
Remove self-doubt by accepting the situation that you are in
There are times when we deny the situation that we are in. In other words, we are not ready to accept the challenges and situations we are in. As humans, we try our best to deny negative situations in life. Therefore the first and foremost responsibility is to accept whatever situation comes your way. Be mature and strong enough to do that. Secondly, accept the feelings that you encounter as a result of its effects. Once we accept the negative impact of the unpleasant situation that we are in, only then we shall be able to find a solution to it.
“Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” (2:156)
To clarify, we must not be disheartened due to the negative situations in life. Consequently, we must not falter and fall into self-doubt. Certainly, we shall face difficult situations in life and we must face them with dignity and possess a challenging disposition.
Have a Strong Support system to get rid of Bad Situation
“And appoint for me a minister for my family, Aaron my brother. Increase through him my strength.” (20:29-31)
The people around you affect you immensely. Just as Hazrat Musa (A.S.) asked Allah to help him, similarly we should also ask Allah to let supportive people be around us. That is to say, we should also strive to have such family members and friends around us that are there to help and support us. Such people that have a strong belief never let us waver and go into a state of self-doubt. That is to say, they are always there to support us and not let us down. We do need such people around us in life because as humans we are in need of support.
Conclusion
Hazrat Musa (A.S.) is the greatest instance of self-confidence. He stood against Pharaoh to save the Muslims from tyranny. He is considered one of the bravest people in the history of Islam. His confidence and courage were not in-built. In fact, it was the result of his prayers. That is to say, we should seek blessings and ask Allah to guide us towards the path that we want to achieve. In the same vein, Hazrat Musa (A.S.) sought help from Allah. To clarify, he asked Allah to help him give strength so that he is able to fight against the enemies of Islam. However, we can also use this supplication to get rid of self-doubt and attain the confidence to lead life successfully and purposefully.
“ [Moses] said, “My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance]. And ease for me my task. And untie the knot from my tongue. That they may understand my speech. (20:25-28)
