“There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah.”
When we take this declaration of faith, we believe firmly in the Oneness of Allah. Subsequently, we submit ourselves in believing that the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) is the messenger of Allah.
Making it obligatory upon the Muslims, Allah has made it clear that without believing in prophet-hood, we cannot achieve the status of being a Muslim. Hence, we clearly understand the importance of not just accepting Mohammed (peace be upon him) as the last prophet, but also following his footsteps. We need to treat him as our role model and apply his ways in our daily lives. Allah has commanded to follow the teachings of Hazrat Mohammed (peace be upon him). It not only guides us towards the straight path but also bestows us with Allah’s reward;
(O Messenger!) Tell people: ‘If you indeed love Allah, follow me, and Allah will love you and will forgive you your sins. Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate.’ (Surah Al Imran, Ayat 31)
Glancing into the daily life of Mohammed (PBUH) & Adapting his Ways
We believe as Muslims that he was the last prophet of Islam and holds the most important message for us. His personality and life is an example for the entire Muslim Ummah till the end of times. Daily actions of the Prophet (PBUH) are meaningful and an example for us to follow. These everyday actions are known as Sunnah. It is rewarding for us if we follow Sunnah. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) said,
“Whoever revives my Sunnah then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.” (Jami At Tirmidhi)
In other words, the one who follows his Sunnah proves their love for him. We shall briefly discuss below a few of his Sunnah that we shall try to revive by following them.
Sleeping and Waking Habit
The Prophet (PBUH) used to sleep early and wake up early. Also, the Prophet used to sleep on his right side. He used to get up in the middle of the night to pray the night prayer, followed by Fajr (morning prayer). Waking up early brings blessings in the house and has a positive effect on our personality.
Behaving with Others
The Prophet (PBUH) is known for his pleasing personality. We hardly find any instances in which he was angry or irritated. There was always a smile on his face that people in his time admired. Ibn Jaz (RA) narrated;
“I have not seen anyone who smiled more than the Messenger of Allah.” (Jami At Tirmidhi)
A smile can do wonders as it solves all the problems around us and helps build better relations. A smile can lift our moods and help us be better in our dealings with people.
Eating Habit
We do not give enough importance to eat adequately. Keeping our stomach full the entire time is an act disliked by the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). He always ate and advised others to eat adequately. We must not eat to a degree that affects our actions. In fact, we must eat in moderate proportions and eat less than what our hunger and appetite demand from us.
Speaking Habit
There are times when we constantly speak without any purpose and a productive topic. The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) refrained from idle talk. He only spoke when it was necessary to speak. He did not indulge in frivolous talks and did not appreciate it as well. In following this Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad, we can save ourselves from backbiting and indulge ourselves in more healthy activities that cleanse our hearts and are beneficial for us.
These are just a few of the several Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). By applying these to our daily life, we can benefit ourselves and gain rewards from Allah.
Why Follow Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)
Source of Guidance
In today’s world, man is clueless and unsure as to which path to follow and which person to gain guidance from. Each person out there is ready to guide us based on their principles and understanding of life. Above all, unfortunately, there are few Islamic scholars who guide us adequately. We are facing a constant battle when it comes to following a particular scholar or a Muslim religious leader.
In this chaotic world, in which each one of us wants to be ahead of others in terms of religion, without true knowledge about it, we must look up to someone rationale and genuine. Due to this, there is no better person to follow and admire, except our beloved Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).
Essential in understanding Islam from life of Mohammed (PBUH)
For us to understand Islam and its real meaning and doctrines, we must study about the Prophet and the life that he led. Also, we must gain an understanding of the teachings that he imparted to us. Those teachings are not just ordinary teachings, rather they provide the complete code of life and are based on the guidance of Allah, the One and Only. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) was a significant Islamic figure. He is the ambassador of Islam and a flag bearer of spreading Islamic principles. For us to understand the essence and meaning of this prestigious religion, we must follow our esteemed Prophet.
When Jibrael asked Mohammad (PBUH) about what Islam is, The Prophet responded in the following words,
“It is that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah,” and he went on to mention the pillars of Islam. Then he asked him about belief and he said, “It is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books and His Messengers.” [Muslim]
A necessary element of Faith
In addition, Allah has emphasized enough to believe in Mohammed (peace be upon him). By doing so, we believe in the book revealed unto him and most importantly on Allah. Allah says in the Quran;
“ So believe in Allah and in His Messenger and in the Light (Quran) that We have sent down. Allah is fully aware of what you do.” (64:8)
Hence, believing in Hazrat Mohammed (peace be upon him) is an obligation for the Muslims. Our belief in Allah is not complete without our belief in Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).
