Why learn to read Quran is important in Islam

To understand the exact meaning and to gain all the relevant and authentic information about something, we have to learn about that thing first. In the same way, when we want to practice Islam, it is necessary to learn about it and to do so, reading the Quran is the only way. When the Quran was revealed by angel Jibril, its first word was “Iqra” which means is to read.

A book is a fundamental source to get knowledge about something. Similarly, in Islam, the holy book Quran is the way to gain the most authentic knowledge about the religion, society, life, nature, and so.

At various points in Islam the learning of Quran is emphasized in the following words;

Whoever recites the Quran well and clearly is equal in rank to the Angels who record creation’s deeds. These Angels are gracious, honourable and of lofty rank. He who finds difficulty in reciting the Qur’an will obtain a double reward.

(Bukhari Muslim)

A person whose breast is devoid of the Quran (i.e., has not learnt anything of the Quran) is like a desolate house.

(Tirmidhi)

On the day of Resurrection, a crown of such brilliance will be placed on the heads of the parents of one who learned the Quran and practiced on its laws, that its glitter will outshine the brilliance of the sun which penetrates your houses. What then do you think will be the position of the one who himself learned the Qur’an and acted in accordance with it?/p>

(Ahmad, Abu Dawud)

A person who recites one letter of the Quran, obtains one virtue; each virtue multiplies to ten virtues. I am not saying that (ALM) is one letter. But, Alif is one letter; Laam is one letter and Meem is one letter.

(Tirmidhi, Darimi)

“Maintain learning the Quran, by heart for verily it is greater in escaping from the chests of men than camels from their reins.”

 (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.

(Bukhari)

“O Abu Zar! It is better for you to learn a single verse of Holy Quran in the morning rather to pray hundreds of Rakaat (Nafal Prayer)”

(Ibn Majah)

Quran does not only provide the basic knowledge about the religion, but it also has all the information about each and everything which a man needs to know to live a balanced life because it is not just a mere religion it is also the way of life. Therefore it is vital for every Muslim to learn to read Quran, not only to know religion but to get him or herself a complete code of conduct about life.

Allah sent down the last holy book Quran to mankind so that they practice what is written in it. Those who follow what is written in the Quran will be rewarded, and those who go against it, will be punished.

The Holy Prophet (SAW) said: “O people I am leaving behind among you the Holy Book (Quran) and the Sunnah (way of Prophet (SAW)), if you follow these in letter and spirit you will never be strayed.”

(Hakim Al-Mustadrik)

Whoever recites the Quran, memorizes it, accepts its halal (lawful things) as halal and haram (forbidden things) as haram (i.e., his beliefs in these matters are correct), Allah, the Exalted, will enter him to Paradise and accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family upon whom entry into Hell has become incumbent (i.e., Allah will forgive them because of his intercession).”
